Romeo and Juliet were dumped over the fence at CWR and were quickly adopted into our resident flock.

They lived happily until Juliet developed health issues and while being treated peacefully passed in her sleep.

Though heartbroken, Romeo carried on and found new love.

ROMEO

Romeo is an African mix goose whose life has been shaped by devotion, loss, and an enduring capacity for love.

He first arrived at the rescue in April of 2014, dumped alongside his beloved girl, Juliet. From the beginning, Romeo lived up to his name—known for his charming ways and his fondness for the ladies. But Juliet was his constant, and together they built a quiet life side by side.

Sadly, Romeo would outlive Juliet. After her passing, he eventually opened his heart again and went on to court Ophelia.

Months later, Ophelia developed serious health issues and was placed in the hospital for treatment. Throughout her stay, Romeo remained close—faithfully calling to her from outside the hospital doors. He missed her so deeply that we made special accommodations, allowing him visiting hours so they could be together. It became clear just how powerful their bond was.

As Ophelia showed signs of improvement, we made the careful decision to release her back into the yard with Romeo while continuing close observation. Her spirit lifted in his presence—her appetite improved, her demeanor softened, and her will to engage with the world returned. Love, it seemed, was part of her medicine.

Despite every effort, Ophelia’s health challenges ultimately exceeded what medical care and devotion could heal, and she passed away last month.

Romeo grieved her deeply.

And yet—true to his nature—Romeo has once again begun to court a new love this spring. His story carries heartbreak, yes, but also resilience. It is a reminder that love does not end with loss—it transforms, it persists, and it finds a way forward.

UNLUCKY IN LOVE

Romeo’s life is one of perseverance, companionship, and above all, love.

Romeo stands by Ophelia, with best bud Shakespeare hanging out in the background.

Romeo never left Ophelia’s side while she was in the hospital, he called to her from outside—and even joined her for visits. True love in feathers.

Domestic geese are social, affectionate, and surprisingly loyal. They often form lifelong bonds with a mate or flock members, and watching their connections develop is truly rewarding. Geese thrive on companionship, and in return, they offer playful personalities, gentle affection, and a unique presence that brings life and warmth to any yard or homestead. For anyone willing to meet their social and emotional needs, geese are not just animals—they’re devoted, charming companions.
